Determination & Believing in Yourself

This week I am not only celebrating my birthday, the launch of my online academy but also 20 years as an entrepreneur.

Those years came with ups and downs. It wasn’t always easy and there have been many times I wanted to give up. But I always managed to overcome those downs and kept focussing on the bigger picture.

Entrepreneurship has given me lots of exciting opportunities I wouldn’t have been able to have done otherwise. For me, entrepreneurship means freedom and being able to live life on my own terms.

Because so many of you would like to do the same but are struggling or don’t know where to start, I am doing a series in which I’ll be sharing the 10 most importent things I learned during 20 years entrepreneurship.

And I’d like to kick off with Determination & Believing in Yourself.

My entrepreneurship did not started the way I had pictured it. The day your business “officially” starts or opens should be a big celebration, right? But for me, the weeks leading up to opening my first business were a nightmare.

Let’s rewind a little bit more. As a young girl I had a dream, like most of us. I had a dream to start my own business in the horse industry. I was determined that was what I was going to do when I would grow up. My parents never had the money to send me to horse riding lessons so I learned myself, on a very cheeky pony who lived on a farm at the edge of town.

I went to agricultural school, did work experience in many different horse businesses both in the Netherlands and overseas.

And when I was given the opportunity to start importing and breeding horses I grabbed it with both hands.

But a few weeks before officially starting I got attacked by the partner I had back then. There’s a long story to it which I won’t share in this post. On that day, I grabbed my dog, we managed to get in my car and I just drove with him following me. It became a chase on the highway and I ended up calling up police who stopped him but then had to let him go again because they had no grounds to arrest him. Instead of me focusing on the opening of my business I found myself hiding at different friend’s places and fearing what would happen if he would find me.

Fast forward; I’ve never heard from him again, I did have a nice opening day and 20 years later I’m still in love with entrepreneurship.

If you are determined you want something, go and get it. No one else is going to make it happen for you. No one else is going to hand it to you on a golden plate. There are always going to be roadblocks on the way.

Believe in your dreams because they are yours to come true. It’s not always going to be easy but you will find a way to make it happen. This doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. If there’s another thing I learned is that’s it’s so much easier to get a mentor/coach. Someone you can talk to when you find yourself stuck or lost and are not sure which direction to go. Someone to help you create a plan which can help you with your dreams. Your dreams are not going to come true by themselves either.
