Coaching vs Other Professions

With so many different (mental health) professions out there these days it’s hard to find the right professional to help you. Let alone that it can be quite overwhelming to find someone who suits your needs.

In this post I will briefly explain what the main modalities are and what the key differences are between them. This will help you to get a better understanding which professional will be able to help you best.

Psychiatry and Psychology

Psychiatry meaning

A psychiatrist is a physician who specialises in psychiatry and is certified to treat mental illnesses. They are medical doctors who evaluate patients to determine whether their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments, or strictly psychiatric. Psychiatrists often use medication to help their clients manage their mental disorders and there are some disorders for which medications are very necessary (schizophrenia and some depressions for examples).

Psychology meaning

Practicing psychologists have the professional training and clinical skills to help people learn to cope more effectively with life issues and mental health problems. After years of graduate school and supervised training, they become licensed by their states to provide a number of services, including evaluations and psychotherapy. Psychologists help by using a variety of techniques based on the best available research and consider someone’s unique values, characteristics, goals, and circumstances.

What is the difference between psychology and psychiatry

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, psychologists are not. Psychiatrists prescribe medication, psychologists can’t. Psychiatrists diagnose illness, manage treatment and provide a range of therapies for complex and serious mental illness. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients.

What is therapy? Therapy, also called psychotherapy, is a long-term process in which a client works with a healthcare professional to diagnose and resolve problematic beliefs, behaviours, relationship issues, feelings and sometimes physical responses. The idea behind therapy is to focus on past traumas and issues to change self-destructive habits, repair and improve relationships and work through painful feelings. In this sense, therapy focuses on the past and on introspection and analysis, with the hope of resolving past issues and creating a happier, more stable future.

A trained counsellor is someone trained to offer a talk-based therapy. There are many types of talk-based therapy. A counsellor may work in partnership with a medical doctor or other health professionals at times to give comprehensive and integrated care. 

Counsellors work with clients experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties to help them bring about effective change and/or enhance their wellbeing.   

Clients could have issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, loss and relationship difficulties that are affecting their ability to manage life.

What Coaching is

“Coach” is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot and can mean different things to different people.  Everyone can call themselves a coach and that’s exactly what is happening at the moment. 

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) from whom I am an accredited member, is the leading global organisation for coaches and coaching. ICF is dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high standards, providing independent certification and building a worldwide network of trained coaching professionals.

ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.

We all have goals we want to reach, challenges we’re striving to overcome and times when we feel stuck. Partnering with a coach can change your life, setting you on a path to greater personal and professional fulfillment.

Within the coaching profession are different modalities such as NLP, Neuro Semantics and many more. I’ll write more about these in a different blog post.

Coaches can specialise in different areas, for example life coaching, business coaching, relationship coaching, executive coaching, team coaching, etc.

A mentor is an individual who acts as an advisor or coach for a less experienced or advanced mentee, providing expertise and professional knowledge from a more experienced perspective.

The purpose of mentoring is to connect an individual who has a lot of knowledge and experience with someone who hasn’t gained the same knowledge or experience—yet.

By having someone who knows more than yourself share advice, offer guidance and be a sounding board for your thoughts you stand to benefit from experience beyond your own. Whether in your career or life, having a mentor is crucial to all of our continued growth and development. 


A Trainer gathers and analyzes information to determine learning needs. Evaluates training programs and materials as well as trainee performance. A trainer is about training/teaching.
