Getting out of your comfort zone develops inner strength, builds your confidence, it makes us more creative, makes us more adaptable to change, stretches our limits and you won’t otherwise know what could have been.

Each of us has our own “comfort zone” which, more than an actual place, is a psychological/emotional/ behavioral “place” that defines the routine of our daily life. Being in our comfort zone feels safe and secure. It is familiar, life is easy and we know what to expect. It describes the patterned world of our existence, keeps us relatively comfortable and calm, and helps us stay emotionally even, free from anxiety and worry to a great degree.

Creating a comfort zone is a healthy adaptation for much of our lives. But so is stepping out of our comfort zone when it’s time to transition, grow, and transform.

You can imagine your comfort zone as a circle. Inside the circle is your safe place, your comfi spot. You know this place very well.

Everything you desire in your life, but do not currently have or do is just outside the circle, and to get it inside you’re probably going to have to do something new or different. You’re going to have to step outside of your comfort zone.

What would life be like for you if you finally got to do that?

To find the strength or the courage to start doing the things you’ve wanted to do for so long? What will that mean for your business?

What goals will you accomplish? Will you finally be able to put yourself out there?

Sometimes we need to get uncomfortable to be able to get comfortable.

Staying inside your comfort zone can stop you from personal growth, from making your dreams come true. It can actually make you feel uncomfortable because you’re not getting to do the things you want to do. Grow your business, charge more for your services, say “no” to someone, leave that unhealthy relationship, overcome the fear of flying so you can travel. Just to name a few things.

I am sure you can come up with many things you’d like to do but staying inside your comfort zone is stopping you from doing so.

Tony Robbins describes it in a clear way: “the human brain is powerful. It allows us to build rocket ships, explore physics and overcome unimaginable challenges. Yet it also craves comfort. In many ways, the brain is a creature of habit. It creates neural pathways that it refers back to whenever it needs to make a decision. These pathways become patterns in our thoughts and behaviors. That’s why it seems like we get stuck in a rut sometimes. If you feel like your life is on a loop, you may need to leave your comfort zone.”

Here are 10 tips to help you get out of your comfort zone:

1. Make changes to your daily routine. Create momentum and stay in the flow. It will take commitment at first but soon these changes will become your new routine and will go easily. For example; if you’re struggling to put yourself out on social media, start with 1 post a day and grow from there.

2. What is the discomfort of stepping outside your comfort really about? Is it a lack of practice, knowledge, fear, overwhelm, commitment, drive …… Create awareness and make a plan of what it is you need.

3. There is no failure, only feedback. Once you start looking different at failure you’ll come to realise all it is is feedback. Use this feedback to make changes and grow. It’s that simple, don’t make things more complicated than they are.

4. Don’t jump all in at once, take baby steps. Make yourself familiar with what’s on the other side and realise it’s really not such a big thing as what you’d been telling yourself. For example; you want to launch a new product but just the thought overwhelms you. Break the process down in an easy to follow plan with smaller steps.

5. What better way to cross that line with someone who’s already been there. Find a mentor or coach to help you overcome deep seeded fears. They can help you overcome your fears, create clarity and help you create the right steps to take.

6. Remember what it’s going to be like on the other side!! Focus on all the positives, all the changes waiting for you to happen.

7. Hold yourself accountable, nothing is going to change unless you make a change. The best part: change is worth celebrating!!

8. Picture the worst case scenario. Think about ways you could deal with those circumstances if they happened. Once you’re prepared for the worst, you can only be happily surprised by something better!

9. Turn every day life into learning experience. Change the way you view your day-to-day life. Look at each day as a chance for you to learn something new. How amazing is life going to be?!

10. Enjoy the process of stepping outside your safe boundaries. Enjoy the fun of discovering things about yourself that you may not have been aware of previously.

Change may seem scary at first but it can lead to the greatest next steps in your life.
